There are also accommodations suitable for people with reduced mobility, so it is necessary to find out beforehand about the accessibility of the establishment.
Good to know : In Tahiti, as elsewhere in French Polynesia, it is better to choose accommodation in height to benefit from the ambient freshness, and a certain absence of mosquitoes.
Boarding houses
Formula that is similar to rural lodgings.
They are in the spotlight throughout the territory and it is undoubtedly the best choice to meet Polynesians.
Pensions, there are everywhere, on all the islands, or almost, at fair prices.
There are officially 2 categories of pensions:
- guest rooms (4 people maximum), with shared bathroom;
- guest fares (bungalows), in a garden, by the sea or on stilts.
It is possible to dine and test the home cooking in most pensions.
In this type of accommodation, it is possible to make excursions (hiking, 4x4, picnic with your feet in the water...).
Hotels
Very decent small hotels displaying affordable prices (comparable to those of family pensions) - with an excellent welcome.
Some hotels also offer beautiful tables, with menus featuring freshly caught fish, local fruits and vegetables.
The dorms
No youth hostel in French Polynesia is affiliated with the international network. But it is possible to find mini rooms, without services, some with two places, others with 4 or 6 that look like dormitories. If you come in low season, you may be alone.
The campsites
This is obviously the most economical solution. Each island, or almost, has one or more fields - often in the garden of the pensions. Some are located by the sea, with their feet in the water! On the most organized sites, there is generally a shared kitchen and sanitary facilities.
Housing in French Polynesia represents a good part of the budget and Tahiti is no exception.
However, if you have enough time to search for “the” accommodation of your dreams, you will undoubtedly find a property with a slightly more reasonable rent.
The price of furnished rentals may vary depending on the "furniture" and other "equipment" included.
Les pensions de famille
Formule qui se rapproche des gîtes ruraux.
Elles sont à l’honneur à travers tout le territoire et c’est incontestablement le meilleur choix pour rencontrer les Polynésiens.
Des pensions, il y en a partout, sur toutes les îles, ou presque, à des tarifs corrects.
Il existe officiellement 2 catégories de pensions :
- les chambres d’hôtes (4 personnes maximum), avec salle de bains partagée ;
- les fares d'hôtes (bungalows), dans un jardin, en bord de mer ou sur pilotis.
Il est possible de dîner et de tester la cuisine familiale dans la plupart des pensions.
Dans ce type de logement, il est possible de réaliser des excursions (randonnée, 4x4, pique-nique les pieds dans l'eau...).
Les hôtels
Des petits hôtels très corrects affichant des tarifs abordables (comparables à ceux des pensions de famille) - avec un excellent accueil.
Certains hôtels proposent aussi de belles tables, avec des menus mettant à l'honneur des poissons fraîchement pêchés, des fruits et légumes locaux.
Les dortoirs
Aucune auberge de jeunesse de Polynésie française n'est affiliée au réseau international. Mais il est possible de rencontrer des mini chambres, sans services, certaines à deux places, d’autres à 4 ou 6 qui ressemblent à des dortoirs. Si vous venez en basse saison, vous y serez peut-être seul(e).
Les camping
C’est évidemment la solution la plus économique. Chaque île, ou presque, dispose d’un ou de plusieurs terrains - souvent dans le jardin des pensions. Certains sont situés en bord de mer, les pieds dans l’eau ! Sur les sites les plus organisés, on trouve généralement une cuisine et des sanitaires communs.
